Most optometrists treat the end of the year as a pause button. Between holiday schedules, year-end patient rushes, and finals or rotations, the job search gets pushed to a "New Year, new me" resolution.
That's exactly why November and December are such a smart time to get started. You don't need to sign an offer before the holidays. But the ODs who use these last weeks of the year to get clear, get organized, and get set up to be found walk into the new year miles ahead of everyone who waited.
1. Use the quiet weeks to get ahead
While most candidates hit pause for the holidays, you can use the slower weeks to get your search in order. That's not about sending applications on Christmas Eve. It's about doing the thinking and prep that's hard to fit in once things get busy.
When the new year arrives and everyone else is just getting started, you'll already know what you want and be ready to act on it.
2. Practices are planning next year's hiring right now
The end of the year is when practice owners look ahead. They're reviewing patient volume, setting budgets, and deciding whether to add an associate, replace a retiring OD, or open a new location.
That means by January, many practices know who they need and are ready to meet candidates. If you've done your prep, you'll be ready to meet them too, right when the timing is best for both sides.
3. More time means better decisions
The biggest advantage of starting early is that you get to be choosy.
Fourth-year students: Starting now gives you time to compare practice settings, talk to multiple practices, and weigh offers side by side. You won't feel pressured to take the first offer that comes along in the spring.
Licensed ODs: If you've been thinking about a change, starting the conversation now lets you plan your move around year-end bonuses, benefits renewals, and your current schedule. That way you can make the switch on your terms instead of in a rush.
Either way, a job search with breathing room leads to a better fit.
What to do before the new year
Kicking off your search doesn't have to mean hours of applications over the holidays. Focus on a few steps that set you up for success:
Get clear on what you want. Private practice, corporate, PE-backed, retail, VA? Think about the setting, location, schedule, and pay structure that fit your life. Not sure? Read What Your Day Actually Looks Like in Every Optometry Practice Setting.
Refresh your materials. Update your resume and polish your LinkedIn profile so you're ready when the right opportunity comes up. (Our guides to making your resume stand out and leveraging LinkedIn can help.)
Research practices. Make a short list of practices or regions you're excited about, so you know who you want to talk to.
Let opportunities come to you. Create a free, anonymous profile on Eye Catching Jobs. Practices can find you based on what you're looking for, and your name stays private until you're ready for an introduction. You can enjoy the holidays while your search keeps working in the background.
Put your head start to work in January
The prep you do now pays off fast. If you're a fourth-year student interested in private practice, join us for our Virtual Private Practice Career Fair, January 20–21, 2027. You'll meet private practices from across the country, all from home.
If you start now, you'll walk into the fair knowing exactly what you're looking for, with your materials ready and your questions in hand. That's how you go from a quick chat to a real opportunity.
